San Francisco Foundation recognizes AlterTheater's new works program as one of the best incubators of new work by Bay Area playwrights! |
2011/2012 Season Kicks Off! AlterTheater needs your help to kick off our 2011/2012 season. Here are some reasons why we hope you’ll consider supporting AlterTheater with a generous donation: --AlterTheater’s been recognized by the San Francisco Foundation as one of the best incubators of new plays by Bay Area writers, and by the highly prestigious Princess Grace Foundation, as one of the top places in the nation to develop promising new talent like Princess Grace award winner Matt Jones (who will star in our spring show, written by Obie Award winner and Oscar nominee (The Motorcycle Diaries) Jose Rivera --in a time when our community and our neighbors are struggling, AlterTheater provides opportunities for affordable, professional theater: more than half of our audience members are low-income. --AlterTheater builds bridges in our community, and strives to create community that is diverse, inclusive, and accepting. --AlterTheater has begun its first-ever playwrights residency program, AlterLab, which will support the development of 5 writers over the coming season --AlterTheater is efficient and lean: according to the California Cultural Data Project, 98% of our resources are spent on programming. No fat cats, no bloated overhead. And one extra incentive to give now, and to give generously: if everyone who donated to our Challenge Match last year gives at least the same amount, then an Anonymous Donor will give AlterTheater an additional $1,500. Thank you for your support, and we look forward to seeing you in a storefront on Fourth Street soon! Support new works, local artists, a community that is diverse, inclusive and accepting. Support telling stories that matter to our community. The cost of new works:_____ $5,000 (A gift at this level helps fund commissioning fees to create new work. New work begins with words on the page!) ______$2,500 (Support an Actor! This covers AlterTheater’s costs for hiring one actor for a production.) ______$2,000 (This covers the cost of an in-house developmental workshop of a new play!) ______$1,500 (Insurance for the year, which helps us get our performance spaces donated! A gift at this level helps us leverage in-kind donations.) _______$1,000 (Help us get the word out! A gift at this level covers our postcard mailing costs.) _______$750 (Designer fee: Turn the lights on for our production!) ______$500 (This is our entire safety budget for the year: from zip ties to wire covers, knee pads for actors: we don’t skimp on your safety or our artists’ safety.) ______$296: one actor's' weekly salary, plus pension benefits and payroll taxes ______$125: all the photocopying costs from Draft One through the Final Rehearsal Draft of a new play _____ $53.75: pays for one actor to do a workshop reading for the playwright. Such a small cost, but absolutely invaluable to our playwrights! Help us create the canon of tomorrow's theater! Your gift is creating a new story. Thank you for your support.
