Jayne Wenger

is a San Francisco based director and dramaturg whose exclusive focus is on original material. Throughout her professional theater career she has been dedicated to the development and direction of new plays, opera, and solo performances. She is the past Artistic Director of the Bay Area Playwrights Foundation and Women’s Ensemble of New York.


She has developed the emerging work of acclaimed playwrights nationwide and her work has been recognized with numerous awards.  She was the director and dramaturg for The Lariat, a new opera by Lisa Scola Prosek, performed in January 2015 at the Thick House in San Francisco.


Recent collaborations include LOVEBIRDS by Marga Gomez performed at the Marsh in San Francisco, LaMama NYC and currently touring in California; Rush At Everlasting, by Arlitia Jones performed at Perseverance Theater in Juneau, Alaska and Wolf by Deke Weaver, part of his on-going series The Unreliable Bestiary. (unreliablebestiary.org) She was the original director and dramaturg for The Winter Bear Project an on-going performing arts and social outreach initiative focused on teen suicide in the rural Native Alaskan communities.


For AlterTheater she was the Director and Dramaturg for Hard Laughter by Ann Brebner and Laurel Graver; Dramaturg for Horses by Brian Thorstensen; American Whupass by Justin Warner and Baba by Denmo Ibrahim.


She is an alumna of Djerassi Resident Artist Program; a regular guest artist and advisory board member for The Last Frontier Theatre Conference in Valdez, Alaska; a member of the Dramatists Guild, Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas, AlterTheater of San Rafael and the League of Professional Theater Women
